The Essacs of Saint-Simeux
A BIT OF HISTORY
Located in Charente, the commune of Saint-Simeux is crossed by the Charente River, rich in fluvial heritage.
Since the 14th century, “essacs”, triangular platforms dividing the river into basins, were used for traditional eel fishing. This fishing method was banned in 2002, but maintenance of the essacs remains essential to preserve heritage and support navigation. Since 2005, the “Les Essacs de Saint-Simeux” association has actively worked to safeguard this local heritage.
PROJECT
In October 2020, the association launched consolidation works to limit water flow through the essacs’ spurs, ensuring the longevity of the structure.
The goal was to strengthen the stone structures while respecting the aquatic environment.
PROMPT Vicat cement was selected for its ability to set rapidly in wet conditions, providing a durable repair while protecting local fauna and flora.

Implementation
Works began by sealing water passages with pure PROMPT natural cement paste, applied directly in the water.
This ensured effective closure of cracks and gaps, preventing infiltration. A cement grout was then gravity-injected into the cracks to consolidate the structures deeply. The intervention was completed in a single day, allowing a rapid restoration of the structure.
