Casa del Navarca at the Segesta Archaeological Park

Overview

Casa del Navarca at the Segesta Archaeological Park

Navarca - restauration archéologique

A bit of history

The Casa del Navarca is a significant archaeological site located within the Segesta Archaeological Park in Sicily. Recent excavations have uncovered a room with "opus scutulatum" flooring, revealing intricate mosaic patterns. These findings necessitated the stabilization of the mosaic floors and the large hall previously discovered. The intervention focused on preserving the mosaic portions and the wall coatings of these areas facing the peristyle. Covered by a layer of earth and overrun by vegetation, many sections were in a precarious state, risking the loss of these important decorative elements.

PROJECT

At the Segesta Archaeological Park, following the recent discovery of a room with "opus scutulatum" flooring, it was deemed necessary to secure its mosaic floors and the large hall previously uncovered. The intervention concentrated on the mosaic portions and the wall coatings of these areas facing the peristyle. Covered by a layer of earth, with extensive gaps and overrun by vegetation, they were in a hazardous condition, posing a risk of losing these significant decorative elements.

Implementation

Retaining walls were constructed to safeguard the edges of the plastered and mosaic areas in all rooms. Important fragments of the decorative tessellation, detached from the substrate, were carefully reassembled.

The works were simplified and expedited by using Prompt Supérieur for its rapid setting time and compatibility with the constituent materials. With various Prompt Supérieur mixes and aggregates, formulated with the support of the reference chemist, it was possible to secure the parts of the flooring and plastering that were severely compromised and preserve them for future restoration.
